Gerald Witt joined Piper Communications in August 2020 after an award-winning journalism career.
As Media Relations Manager at Piper Communications, Gerald understands how to pitch stories and hit the right audience with the correct message. He can speak the languages found in newsrooms, government and politics. Gerald enjoys breaking up complex problems to find solutions. He also appreciates making real connections with people and building relationships. A former editor of his said that having Gerald on a job brings the same kind of confidence as “knowing there’s a six-pack at home in the fridge.”
Gerald grew up in Charlotte, N.C. and is an honors graduate of Appalachian State University. He worked for newspapers in North Carolina and Virginia before landing at the Knoxville News Sentinel. In his 15-year news career, he grew from print to digital news while covering government, politics, business and sports. He’s won regional, state and national journalism awards for community service, higher education reporting, investigative journalism and breaking news. Most recently, he was an investigator for the Knox County Public Defender.
Outside of the office, Gerald teaches journalism at the University of Tennessee and volunteers with the Bijou Theatre, Knoxville Track Club and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of East Tennessee. He and his wife Lauren enjoy fine food and drink, gardening, live music and traveling. Gerald is a decent home cook and a very average fisherman.
